Wollongong

Like Shellharbour, Wollongong has wonderful beaches and scenery with a little more hustle and bustle. Travelling 30 min drive north of Shellharbour, Wollongong's beaches are also patrolled which means great swimming and surfing for all the family with great parklands for picnics in the sun. The area is also home to the largest Buddhist Temples in the Southern Hemisphere.

Kiama

Go for the blowholes, and Kiama's laid-back charm. A 20 min drive south of Shellharbour, Kiama is the quintessential Australian seaside town: think surf beaches, calm bays for swimming, whales and dolphins, and cafes and restaurants that reflect the surrounds.

Macquarie Pass National Park

With terrific bushwalking and birdwatching opportunities, wonderful waterfalls, views to the ocean and the blazing crimson of Illawarra flame trees, Macquarie Pass National Park is well worth a visit if you're looking for things to do on the south coast.

Reddall Reserve

Here children can paddle, swim and play in safety and there are plenty of picnic and barbecue facilities, kiosk and toilets. The Pelican Park playground is a dynamic place for kids to play that was designed with wheelchair access in mind for children with disabilities.

Myimbarr Community Park

Myimbarr Community Park is a unique combination of top-level sporting facilities and beautiful environmental areas, including a substantial wetland and bird habitat. It's also a great place for a casual stroll.

Illawarra Grevillea Park

The Illawarra Grevillea Park is arguably the best of its kind in Australia. Just walking through the gates invites a feeling of getting back to nature. Set against the backdrop of the stunning Illawarra escarpment, and with views to the ocean this is a plant lover's paradise. At every turn there is something unique to see. It has the quality of a botanic gardens, displaying the rare and the beautiful. And then there is the rainforest, the birds and so much more.

Wentworth Cottage Park

The park is of heritage significance in that it was the site of Wentworth Cottage, the home of one of Shellharbour City’s most well known pioneering families.

Blackbutt Forest Reserve

Blackbutt Reserve is the largest natural bushland reserve in the Illawarra, covering 250 acres. The Reserve is a key feature of Shellharbour and is the last remaining viable remnant of coastal plain forest in the Illawarra

Bass Point Reserve

Bass Point Reserve is located just south of Shellharbour Village This significant headland features one of the few diverse littoral rainforests in the Illawarra Region, a large collection of significant Aboriginal and European heritage sites and extensive marine habitats.

Warilla Beach

Warilla Beach is a popular surfing and swimming beach. The beach is an east-facing 2 km beach extending between Windang Island and the shallow inlet at Barrack Point.

Warilla Beach is patrolled for the seven month season. This beach is open to plenty of swell and offers great surfing waves. The best access to the patrolled area is from Osborne Parade. This patrol has easy access from the car park and is only a short walk from the car.

Minnamurra Beach

A very popular surfing spot just off the Minnamurra River estuary part of the 250 hectares of pristine coastal reserve sited on 8 km of coastline.

Killalea Beach

Killalea Beach or 'The Farm' as the locals know it is one of the most popular surfing beaches on the South Coast. One of the most important and unique facts about The Farm is that it faces to the south catching the south swell that predominantly runs up the coastline and is offshore in a northeast wind.

Killalea Beach was declared a National Surfing Reserve in 2009. Note: Killalea Beach is not patrolled.

Shellharbour North Beach

Shellharbour North Beach is a 1 km long, slightly curving east-facing beach, extending south from the rocks of Barrack Point to a small rocky protrusion. This beach offers some shelter from southerly winds, though is open to the most direction of swell.

The southern end of North Beach is patrolled and provides the best location for swimming.

There are beach breaks along main beach, while off the southern rocks is a hollow right-hander called Cowries.

Shellharbour South Beach

Located between Shellharbour Village and Bass Point, Shellharbour South Beach is just minutes from Shell Cove. Shellharbour South Beach faces south east and offers a long stretch of beach ideal for swimming, body boarding, surfing, fishing, relaxing or walking along the water’s edge.

Here families can enjoy the northern end of the beach which is patrolled 7 days a week from mid December until the end of January and on weekends from February until the end of April. Surfers will also have plenty of choice with various breaks including the Shallows and Redsands, while fishing enthusiasts can head to the rock ledges which provide good fishing spots all year round.

Oak Flats Olympic Pool

Oak Flats 50m Pool also has a 25m outdoor heated pool available for public use. There is a toddler pool available as well for the younger ones.

Warilla Public Pool

Warilla Pool provides a 50 metre pool and toddlers pool that is open to the public.

Albion Park Swimming Pool

Open seven days. 6am – 6pm from early November to late March,
10.00am – 6pm during public holdiays.
